Old Polish Wedding Traditions

Most of the Polish wedding traditions come from old times. And, they are collected around luck, wealth and comfort in the marriage.

Traditions from the Old Poland

Brides wearing a wreath which is made with fresh flowers, it also includes rosemary. It symbolizes fidelity.

During the ceremony, the bride tries to drink wine from a glass. If she dos not spill it, it means that she is a lucky woman.

In those days, the couple used to ride a horse while the guests were walking behind them to the reception.

In general, Polish weddings have so many guests in the most common place in Poland.

As soon as the couple arrive at the wedding place, the couple greet them for the Blessing of Salt and Bread. It is about offering bread, salt and wine to the couple. Bread symbolizes the hope of parents for children not to be hungry.

The salt symbolizes the hard times that they might have and it reminds that they need to work together. The wine symbolizes that they would never be thirsty and they would always be in wealth.

After the first speech, the couple break glasses to throw them. The second toast includes wine shot in general.

There is one popular tradition which is called Oczepiny, it is about the bridal veil and taking it off to put around children. It symbolizes that she is not innocent anymore and she accepts her responsibilities as a wife and mother.

During the reception, there is no possibility that any table is without drink. Mostly, vodka is offered.

The other common tradition is Money Dance. The guests are supposed to pay money to dance with the couple or one of them. After the wedding, they have the money. In general, it is used for honeymoon.


  • It is believed that getting married with someone who has a name which starts with R, brings good luck.
  • If the bride puts her shoes at the window before the wedding, it means that she wishes the wedding day weather to be good.
  • If there is no rose in her bouquet, it means that she has a pain in her heart.
  • If the bride does not cry at the ceremony (which is expected), it means she would cry during her marriage.
